 Раритетеная югославская военная драма - мальчик и девочка потеряли свои семьи во время воздушного налета. Они где то слышали о долине, где всегда мир и вообразили, что это - дом дяди мальчика, поэтому, в надежде на лучшее, они начинают свой путь в долину. В то же самое время подбит самолет и чёрный американский пилот успевает выскочить с парашютом, он находит детей у брода на реке и помогает им выживать. Однако и немцы, и партизаны знают об американце и главный вопрос - кто первым до него доберётся...
A boy and a rather younger girl lost their families in an air raid. They have heard about a valley where there is always peace and fancy that this is the house of the boy's uncle. They start wandering for the valley. At the same time an airplane is shot down and the black American pilot jumped by parachute. He finds the children at a ford. There is absolutely no danger. But the girl is standing in the middle of the river, scared and crying and neither daring to go forth or back. The pilot cannot abandon the children although they will reduce his chance of escaping. Both the Germans and the partisans know that the pilot had survived. Who will find him first? Several things happen in rapid succession. The children and the pilot find the uncle's house, which had since a long time been abandoned. The Germans arrive and catch the pilot. The partisans attack and liberate the pilot...

 В вольном переводе «Poil de Carotte» — «Рыжик», а буквально — что-то вроде «морковных волос». На это затейливое прозвище откликается рыжеволосый мальчишка, застенчивый, тщеславный, мечтательный и трусливый. В родной семье он вроде золушки; все привыкли делать из него посмешище, особенно мать, черствая и холодная женщина, которая издевается над ним с изощренным ехидством. Его обижает брат Феликс, дразнит сестра Эрнестина. Чтобы спасти себя, он предается мечтаниям, результатом которых является странное поведение, глупые, а порой и жестокие поступки. Мальчик становится робким, скрытным, лицемерным! Показан трагизм столкновения детского мировосприятия с пороками семьи.

Julien Duvivier is not only one the most important French directors ("Golgotha"), he is also one of the most important American directors there ever was ("Tales of Manhattan" and so many others). His "Poil de carotte", which I saw on French Ontario television tonight, is not only an immortal classic for its interpretation by a ten year old Robert Lynen, but also for its script, its photography - which didn't age at all since 1932 -, its sound and music and its general air of realism. It's about the suffering of unloved children. As such, it is certainly one of the inspirations behind Kubrick's and Spielberg's "A.I.". Many directors have borrowed from this film, notably Robert Bresson in "Mouchette" and Walt Disney in "Cinderella" (the scene where the wicked stepmother - here, the hero's real mother - sneaks up behind Cinderella to lock her up in her room).
